Fix a problem
The work has not arrived
Check whether the job started, needs something from you, or finished somewhere else.
A missing result does not tell you whether the job failed. It may be waiting to start, waiting for information, waiting for approval, or saved somewhere you have not checked.
First find out what happened to the original job. Sending the same request again can create duplicate work or make it harder to identify the result you need.
I asked, but nothing happened
Section titled “I asked, but nothing happened”Look at the response to your original request. It may contain a question, an approval request, or a missing source that prevents the next step. If you use a work board, check that the job is assigned and ready to start. Ask for the status of that same job before requesting it again; the result may already be waiting in the agreed delivery location.
Check what you agreed
Section titled “Check what you agreed”Open the conversation or work record where you gave the job. Look for three things:
- The request: what result did you ask for, and which information did you provide?
- The response: did your employee confirm it could do the job, ask a question, or say it needed something first?
- The destination: where did you agree the result would appear?
A discussion about a possible job is different from a clear instruction to start it. Likewise, a draft schedule in a conversation does not confirm that recurring work has been configured.
Ask for the current position
Section titled “Ask for the current position”Use the same conversation or documented work channel where possible. This keeps the original request close to the follow-up.
Please check the job I gave you about [job]. Has it started, is it waiting for something, or is it finished? Tell me what is complete, what is still needed, and where I should look for the result. Do not start a duplicate job.
Treat the reply as a status report to check. If it says a file is finished, open the file. If it says a connection is unavailable, use connection or file missing.
Clear the next obstacle
Section titled “Clear the next obstacle”- Missing information: provide the specific item requested, using your agreed sharing route.
- Approval needed: review the proposed action and clearly approve or change it. Use review and approve.
- Finished elsewhere: open the reported destination and confirm the file is the expected version.
- Not started: restate one clear job and ask what is needed before it can begin.
- Recurring work did not run: check your handoff for the agreed schedule, start conditions, and delivery location. Follow repeat a job.
If there is still no clear answer, ask for help with the original request, the time you gave it, and the last status you received. Remove business details that support does not need.
You are back on track when: you have either opened the result or identified one specific next action and who needs to take it. An unanswered status is a reason to investigate, not a reason to assume completion.
